Los Angeles, California – September 2, 2026 – On August 28, the college student project team of Miao Embroidery Outbound · Nyonya Culture Homebound from Guizhou Normal College concluded their docking visit in Malacca, Malaysia, and officially reached three in-depth cooperation consensuses on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) with the local Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Malaysia.

This young team, composed of university students, has long been rooted in Guizhou, engaging in cultural sorting of Miao embroidery, connecting with local embroiderers, and promoting the on-site revitalization of the craft. From on-campus craft workshops to ICH fairs across the province, they have gradually brought this delicate fingertip craft from the mountains to wider public attention. This cross-sea collaboration marks the first time the team has extended the reach of Miao embroidery communication overseas, expanding their work from local ICH practices to transnational cultural connectivity, cross-border industrial implementation, and youth cultural inheritance and exchange.

In the preliminary preparation for the overseas partnership, the team also identified many challenges in taking ICH global: a handful of exhibitions alone cannot sustain long-term public attention, and momentum quickly fades after events conclude; local designs and content struggle to adapt to overseas cultural contexts, making it hard to truly integrate into local daily life; and ICH practitioners on both sides lack stable communication channels, resulting in only superficial technical exchanges.

The team made a breakthrough starting with two-way cultural content linkage. The first cooperation finalized with the Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Malaysia is the two-way interactive ICH-themed parade and exhibition: China and Malaysia will take turns hosting Miao embroidery and Nyonya culture showcase parades, combining costume displays with song and dance performances. This will not only bring Guizhou Miao embroidery to Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, but also introduce distinctive Nyonya culture into China, realizing mutual learning and dissemination of intangible cultural heritage between the two countries.

Different from traditional static exhibitions, this two-way parade brings ICH into real-life scenarios. Miao embroidery is no longer just an exhibit behind glass cases; instead, it marches through local streets and communities along with the procession. Similarly, Nyonya folk culture will enter campuses and markets in China through exchange activities. While cultural exchange remains the core, ICH communication no longer revolves solely around craftsmanship itself, but is infused with more authentic, down-to-earth human warmth.

To inject continuous fresh impetus into the dissemination and inheritance of ICH culture, the team takes youth talent exchange as the core focus of the cooperation. Both sides have jointly built an exchange and training platform for young ICH practitioners and embroiderers, and will carry out exchange activities such as skill workshops and campus sharing sessions in batches. Young participants will not only learn traditional embroidery techniques from both regions, but also engage in cultural interpretation, creative expression and communication practices, reactivating the contemporary value of traditional crafts from a youth perspective.

The young students involved in the project are the most vibrant driving force. As the main initiators and executors of the entire project, students from Guizhou Normal College have been fully involved throughout the whole process: from sorting cultural materials and refining cooperation plans in the early stage, to face-to-face communication and finalizing details during their visit to Malaysia. They understand the cultural roots of Miao embroidery and are familiar with the aesthetics and communication methods of today’s young people, serving as an important bond connecting intangible cultural heritage between the two regions. As the cooperation advances step by step, more young people from both China and Malaysia will join in the future.

Building on cultural connectivity and talent exchange, the team is exploring a market-oriented path for ICH to go global. Leveraging the design and creative advantages of the university and the local market resources of the association, young people from both sides will jointly conduct cultural and creative R&D: integrating traditional Miao embroidery patterns with Nyonya Kebaya embroidery techniques to co-create ICH cultural and creative products that feature both cultural characteristics and adapt to local markets. This explores an overseas implementation model of “ICH + Youth Design”, enabling traditional crafts to be passed down for generations and reach a broader global audience.

From on-campus cultural research to local ICH revitalization, and further to cross-sea cultural connectivity and industrial exploration, this young team is transforming Guizhou Miao embroidery from a niche craft in the mountains into a vibrant bond for China-Malaysia cultural exchanges. This is not only an important achievement of Guizhou Normal College’s first overseas ICH practice project for college students, but also blazes a sustainable path for Miao embroidery going global — one led by youth, rooted in culture, and supported by industrial implementation. It also cultivates a cross-regional youth collaborative force for the living inheritance of intangible cultural heritage.
